Decades: 2000's

A popular Disney Channel series starring Billy Ray Cyrus and his daughter Miley, Hannah Montana chronicles the adventures of a teenage girl who moves from Nashville, TN, to Malibu -- and also lives a double life as pop star Hannah Montana to boot. Miley Cyrus stars as Miley Stewart and Hannah, while her dad plays her father and manager on the show, Robbie Stewart. Miley Cyrus got the acting bug while on the set of her dad's show Doc, earning her first role playing a character named Kylie. She also appeared on another of her father's shows, Country Colgate Showdown, and in music videos such as Rhonda Vincent's "If Heartaches Have Wings" and movies such as Big Fish. She won the lead role in Hannah Montana, and after the show began airing in 2006 and became a hit, she began performing live as Hannah Montana, first at Walt Disney World and then as the opening act for the Cheetah Girls' tour in fall 2006. At that time, the Hannah Montana soundtrack was released. Miley Cyrus also had a record deal with Hollywood Records in the works. The second season of Hannah Montana began in spring 2007, and Hannah Montana, 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, which featured a disc of new Hannah songs and a disc of Miley songs, arrived that summer. Late that year, Cyrus embarked on the Best of Both Worlds tour, which spawned the Best of Both Worlds concert film and album in spring 2008. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

Decades: 2000's

Young Miley Cyrus became an overnight sensation in 2006 as the star of the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana, but fortunately her family has had some experience with that sort of thing -- her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, went from obscurity to stardom in a few short months when the song "Achy Breaky Heart" hit the charts in 1992. The success of "Achy Breaky Heart" was hardly the only memorable event for Billy Ray that year -- on November 23, 1992, he and his wife welcomed their daughter Destiny Hope Cyrus into the world. Destiny's cheerful disposition as a child earned her the nickname Smiley, which stuck when it was shortened to Miley. Miley's career as a professional actress began in 2003, when she appeared in an episode of the television series Doc, which starred her father; the same year, she landed a small role in the Tim Burton film Big Fish. Miley developed an interest in music early on, writing songs and learning to sing while still a preteen, and in 2005 she landed a role that allowed her to put her skills in acting and music to work. Miley was cast in the title role of Hannah Montana, in which she played a teenage girl leading a double life -- by day, she's Miley Stewart, an ordinary kid dealing with school, her friends, her siblings, and all the other foibles of life for a 14-year-old, while a night she dons a wig and becomes Hannah Montana, a multi-platinum pop star whose career is guided by her dad Robby Stewart, a successful songwriter. However, Miley's friends don't know she's also Hannah, and keeping this a secret is no simple matter. Debuting in March 2006, Hannah Montana became an immediate success with young viewers, and in October, a soundtrack CD was released, featuring Miley singing eight songs from the show along with five related tracks, including a duet between Miley and her father Billy Ray on "I Learned from You." That fall, Miley hit the road, wowing audiences as the opening act for another Disney-spawned pop act, the Cheetah Girls, and in March 2007, the Hannah Montana album was reissued in a special edition featuring a bonus DVD, not long after the show's theme song, "The Best of Both Worlds," was released as a single. A second Hannah Montana album, Hannah Montana, Vol. 2: Meet Miley Cyrus, is scheduled for release on June 26, 2007. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

original Wyckoff, New Jersey

Decades: 2000's

New Jersey siblings Joseph, Kevin, and Nicholas Jonas craft hook-filled power pop anthems in the vein of the Ramones, Hanson, and the Modern Lovers. The young East Coast natives -- in 2006 the trio topped out at 16, 17, and 13, respectively -- were reared in the city of Wyckoff under the tutelage of musician parents. The group formed initially around the soulful voice of Nicholas, who had wowed enough executives at Daylight/Columbia Records to warrant a solo album, but when the brothers began writing and performing new songs together, it became apparent to both band and label that something special was happening. Their full-length debut, It's About Time, was released in August 2006, followed by the eponymous Jonas Brothers in 2007. The band toured to support the album, selling out shows coast to coast including a stop at the Gibson Amphitheater in Los Angeles which was the fastest sold out show in the venue's history. The reality television show Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream followed along with Camp Rock, a 2008 original Disney Channel television movie that featured the brothers and up-and-comer Demi Lovato. The movie was watched by 8.9 million viewers and launched the Jonas Brothers single "Burnin' Up".~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
